Dementia Awarenss Week, 2016

Are you living with dementia, caring for someone with dementia or simply interested in finding out more about the disease? Then why not come along to one of our Dementia Awareness Week events? We hope this year's programme, which has been put together by our Health and Wellbeing Group, will continue to help Twyford gain recognition as a Dementia Friendly Community.

Mon 16 May, Contented Dementia presentation

Where: Waitrose meeting room
When: 6pm and 7pm
Details: How to support the wellbeing of a person living with dementia: a new understanding of dementia and the difference we can make.

Tue 17 May, Introduction to dementia

Where: St. Thomas More church hall, London Road
When: 6.30 for 7pm
Details: Talk aimed at those who support people with dementia or suspect a friend or family member might have the condition.

Tue 17 May, Screening of ‘Still Alice’

Where: St. Thomas More church hall, London Road
When: 7.45-9pm
Details: Oscar-winning film about one person's journey with dementia.

Wed 18 May,  Art class for people with dementia

Where: La Fontana, Wargrave Road
When: 10-11.30am
Details: Artist-led session exercising cognitive skills whilst having fun.

Wed 18 May, Aromatherapy hand massages

Where: Halcyon, High Street at Bell Corner
When: 11.30am-12.30pm
Details: Therapeutic and de-stressing aromatherapy hand massages for carers and anyone living with dementia.

Wed 18 May, Dementia Friends session for business people

Where: Waitrose staff canteen
When: 6.30 for 7pm
Details: Gain an insight into living with dementia, register as a Dementia Friend and convert that understanding into action.

Thu 19 May, Hands on Puppet Show

Where: The Piggott School, Wargrave Road
When: 9am
Details: Theatre workshop using puppets and actors to raise dementia awareness. (For Piggott School pupils only)

Thu 19 May, Sing along with Julia George

Where: Bridge House nursing home, High Street
When: 2pm
Details: Fun session in a welcoming environment enabling people with dementia to engage with others through song and reminiscence.

Fri 20 May, The Great Memory Bake-Off

Where: Age Concern Day Centre, Polehampton Close
When: 3.30-5pm
Details: Villagers are invited to bake cakes, cupcakes or biscuits from an old, family recipe and bring them along to the Age Concern Day Centre. The entries will then be judged in two categories (children aged 4-16 and adults age 16 and over) by anyone and everyone present! Costs £2 per entry and all profits go to Twyford and District Age Concern. Tea and coffee will be served along with your cakes!

Sat 21 May, Dementia awareness information tent

Where: Opposite entrance to Waitrose
When: 10am-2pm
Details: Leaflets, information and signposting for people wanting to know more about dementia.

A permanent dementia information post will be made available to library visitors.
