Front Garden Competition

Are your shrubs and blooms a cut above the rest? Then why not enter Hare Hatch Sheepland's front garden competition? The winner will receive a voucher for £100 to spend at Sheeplands; the runner up a £75 voucher and the third placed entry a £50 voucher. This is just one of many events, projects and activities organised by our members in support of Twyford's 2017 Thames and Chilterns in Bloom bid. Last year, we picked up a silver gilt medal as a first-time entrant to the competition and we're hoping to build on that success this year. Other projects include our village hanging baskets (over 90 will be going up this year!) and new flower beds along the wall behind the Tesco passage. Last year's inaugural front garden competition was won by Sally Castle who lives in Ruscombe. Sheeplands' owner Rob Scott said: ‘We were so pleased with the reaction to last year’s competition that we were never in any doubt that we would repeat it.’ Entry forms should be submitted by 31 May, 2017.

Planning permission granted for Twyford Library

The Polehampton Trust has asked us to pass on the press release below. Twyford Together is very pleased to see that this planning application has at last been successful and we believe it should, in time, enable Twyford to have a new community centre and library.

Press Release:
After over three years of discussions and changes in the plans with several organisations, The Polehampton Charity has received planning permission from Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) for the new library in the Old Boys' School at the top of Polehampton Close. Planning Application 153122 and Listed Building Consent Application 153123 can both be viewed on WBC's website.

The Grade II listed Old School building will be restored and will house the library which is to be re-located from the portakabin building on the other side of Polehampton Close.

Local architect, Francis Sedgman, has designed a two-storey extension which sympathetically echoes the curves of the roof and features of the Old School. (See architect’s drawings and a photo model).

The building will accommodate a room for the use of Twyford and Ruscombe Local History Society to replace their existing portakabin adjacent to the present library. Thames Valley Police will also have an enquiry desk in the building and there will be a room in the main library space available as a general purpose meeting room which can be booked by local groups.

The plans include a new two-storey building alongside the school, which will be linked by a glass atrium to provide:

• A covered seating area for the cafe.
• A meeting area, with local notice boards and other information.
• Much needed public toilets.
• An office/file storage area for the use of Twyford Parish Council
• The space below will be rehearsal and storage space for Twyford & Ruscombe Theatre Group, which currently occupies the Old Boys' School.

Twyford a runner-up in High Street awards

Twyford has finished a runner-up in the race to be crowned Britain’s 'Best Village High Street'. Twyford and Brigg made it into the top three but were pipped to the post by West Kilbride at an award ceremony in London’s Admiralty House earlier today. Gordon Storey, TVP's Business Forum leader who managed Twyford's campaign said:

"I would like to thank everyone who voted and all of our members who helped put on such a good show for the judges. We would have happily settled for second place when we filled out the forms earlier this year. It created a real buzz in the village and also reminded residents what TVP is all about and what we have achieved."

Under Secretary of State (Minister for Local Government), Marcus Jones said:

"Twyford deserves the very highest praise for being a finalist in this year’s Great British High Street Awards. Their innovative ideas and hard work on the ground really made them stand out and we’ll be sharing their excellent example to help others learn from their success."

To find out more about this year's winners, visit the Great British High Street website.

Vote for Twyford in Great British High Street Competition!

High Street of the Year Award Twyford has made it into the final of a national competition to find Britain's best high street. 230 communities across the country entered the Government-led competition but only 21 made it into the final seven categories. If successful, Twyford will win a share of the £50,000 cash prize pot. We now need you to vote for Twyford in the 'Best Village High Street' category online. This is the first year that the public has been given the chance to vote directly and it has been rumoured that Twyford is currently in last place in our category in the online vote! You can vote once a day, every day, until Friday 13 November. We also need you to champion Twyford’s entry on social media using the ‪#‎Twyford2win, ‪#‎GBHighSt hashtags or print off and display a poster. The Future High Streets Forum judging panel made up of industry leaders from across retail, property and business will be taking all of this into account when they pay Twyford a visit and make their final decision.

So what difference could winning The Great British High Street Competition make to Twyford? Joanne Bamford, a representative from Belper, last year’s winning market town, said:
“Winning the Great British High Street has been a wonderful boost to the town, stimulating interest and encouraging new partners to work with us. Local residents are more aware of how special their town is and the publicity has encouraged visitors from neighbouring areas to make a trip to see what the town has to offer.
On the back of the competition we have received enquiries from new retailers considering expanding into the town, prospective residents looking to relocate and looking for a town with a real identity to coach companies planning to visit the area. The award has provided us with a wonderful platform to promote our town and the innovative projects delivered by the partners. It has also generated a number of new ideas which we hope to implement to allow the town to continue to improve and build on the success. ”

Support Twyford's Great British High Street entry!

High Street of the Year AwardTVP has decided to enter Twyford into the Great British High Street Competition 2015. The competition, now in its second year, is looking to celebrate the hard work of local groups up and down the country who are working together to support their local high street and its link with the wider community. We thought this would be an excellent opportunity to profile all the efforts of our businesses, traders and residents and show how everyone has come together over the past few years to make the village centre a more attractive and vibrant place for people to visit and enjoy.

We now need your support to champion Twyford’s entry on social media. You might like to tell everyone what you love about Twyford using the #GBHighSt hashtag, tweet your favourite photos of Twyford and display them on Pinterest, blog about what makes Twyford special or leave a comment on our Facebook page.

The judges will be reviewing this over the next few weeks so we would urge you to do this as soon as possible! And if you would like to find out more about the competition, visit the Great British High Street website.

Twyford in bloom!

If you take a stroll in Twyford this week, you’ll notice a number of new hanging baskets adorning shop fronts and local businesses. The floral displays have been funded by local businesses and subsidised by TVP’s patron, Lady Elizabeth Godsal. TVP’s Environment Group Leader, Paul Cassidy, came up with the idea and is hoping to make it an annual event: “Next year we are aiming for sixty plus baskets and will enter the village in bloom competition to tie in with TwyFest. We would love more local businesses to come forward in 2016 and families to buy specific baskets to go up near their homes.”

Changes to Twyford’s train services - have your say!

You may be aware that a number of changes are coming to Twyford’s train services. Peak hour through trains to/from the Henley branch are due to stop running from 2017, new electric trains are being ordered to add capacity and from 2019 Crossrail services will be introduced. This may in future result in the end of a number of services Twyford currently benefits from including "fast" trains to/from London and the through services to Oxford. The Henley Branch User Group (HBUG) is meeting at The Duke of Wellington pub in Twyford on Wednesday 10 June between 7 and 8 pm and invites everyone who is interested to come along and discuss the plans and possible responses.
5 June 2015

Show your support for station car park improvements!

The Henley Branch User Group is collecting individuals' emails to show the volume of support for First Great Western’s plans to increase car park capacity at Twyford station. The award of funding by the Department of Transport is through a competitive bidding process so having strength of support behind this is important. Messages of support can be emailed to henleybranchusergroup@gmail.com by Wednesday 10 June. You can also ask to join the group at this e-mail address and be kept up-to-date on issues affecting the line. TVP has already issued a letter of support for the proposed car park improvements.
5 June 2015

TVP campaigning pays off!

Thanks to pressure placed on First Great Western by TVP's Transport Group leader, Marco Taylor and the HBUG, there is now a new weekday fast train back from London at 19:36, an extra carriage on one of the busiest morning services (the 07:20 to Paddington) and a new late night fast train home on Fridays from London at 23:42. Also, the station lifts are due to soon benefit from a trial of new technology allowing them to operate 24/7. If successful, this will open up step-free access to the station throughout the week.

Dementia Awareness Week: 18-23 May.

Next week sees the start of our first Dementia Awareness Week with a special screening of the Oscar-winning film, Still Alice. We hope the events and information sessions, which are aimed at both businesses and residents, will help Twyford gain recognition as a Dementia Friendly Community. TVP's drive to become a Dementia Friendly Village began last year after we joined Wokingham Borough's Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) along with several members of our Health and Wellbeing Group: TimeFinders, Age Concern Twyford, Bridge House and Home Instead. If you would like to find out more about the DAA, become a Dementia Friend or get involved in this initiative, then click here.

What would make Twyford a better place to live?

This month, we’ll be asking local residents to tell us how they think Twyford can be improved. Villagers are invited to complete a short questionnaire which will be published in RG10 and on our website at the end of October. The form will help TVP to assess what progress has been made on Twyford 2020 – our ten-year Action Plan for the village. It will also enable us to set key priorities for the next five years. This is your opportunity to speak your mind!

Competition winners receive awards

The winners of a brand new initiative involving The Piggott School and TVP were presented with their prizes at TVP’s annual Awards Ceremony last night. Pupils from The Piggott School had been asked to develop a viable proposition for a new business in the Twyford area. The competition was the brainchild of Business and Economics teacher, Ashley Pearce. Mr Pearce approached TVP in July, 2013 hoping to find a judge for his competition. But TVP did one better than that and paired the students with a ‘mentor’ from TVP’s Business Forum.

In April, six groups were chosen to present their ideas to six ‘dragons’: TVP chairman, Patrick Heather, local business owners Dave Meadowcroft and Rob Yeadon, Paul Wills from Millgate Homes, Sheena Kitto from Interserve and The Piggott School’s Head Teacher, Hilary Winter. The 'den' was held in Interserve’s boardroom and prizes worth over £400 were donated by Millgate homes. See below for details of all the winners.

TwyFest raises 45k for charity

A huge thank you to all of you who attended TwyFest and helped to make it such an overwhelming success in its first year. "Do it again", "Brilliant", "Loved every minute” are just some of the comments we received in our Donkey Derby tent on Sunday. Just under £45,000 was raised for charity thanks to a staggering donation of £40,000 from the David Brownlow Charitable Foundation. The money will be going to Twyford Charities Together, St Mary’s Church, Twyford District Youth and Community Centre, Michael Sobel Hospice, RNLI and Cancer Research UK. “The £40,000 was the icing on an already large cake - getting that donation was certainly one of the most memorable moments of my 10 years of retirement!”, said TVP’s Business Forum leader, Gordon Storey.

Any old spoons?

Uri Geller spoon appealIllusionist, magician and spoon-bender, Uri Geller has set villagers in Twyford a challenge:  to donate 3000 spoons in four weeks.  If residents succeed, the famous entertainer will perform at ‘TwyFest’ – a ten-day village festival which TVP is staging at the end of May.  The spoons are desperately needed for a statue of a gorilla which Geller commissioned from the Ironwork Centre in Shropshire.  Geller intends to use the gorilla to inspire ill children invited to his garden in Sonning-on-Thames.  Festival organiser, Paul Williams, is urging villagers to help out:  “Please can everyone help to spread the word - post on Facebook, speak to friends and every time you go out for a meal or to someone’s house in the next four weeks, ask if you can have a couple of spoons!  We need a mixture of teaspoons, dessert spoons and tablespoons – they can be any age and any size but should be made entirely of metal.”  Spoons can be dropped off at Twyford Lighting or The Duke of Wellington.  The deadline is 23 February.
